Every year on May 31, the world celebrates World No Tobacco Day (WNTD). This annual event educates the public on the harms of smoking, tobacco companies' business practices, and promotes the life-saving health benefits of quitting.
While smoking is not illegal in all parts of the world, it has been banned or restricted in most countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that about one trillion cigarettes are smoked every year worldwide and tobacco use kills seven million people annually.

The first thing to know about this event is usually follows a theme from previous years like: "I quit tobacco for good" (IQLTFG) or "Puff less, live more" etc., what the World Health Organization (WHO) is doing to combat tobacco use, and what people all over the world can do to claim their right to health and a healthy lifestyle, as well as to safeguard future generations.
This year the theme is "Commit to quit". The COVID-19 pandemic has led to millions of tobacco users saying they want to quit. Commit to quit. This is the right time to initiate some new change in the life. As a proverb says, an action practiced for 21 days becomes a habit. So make a habit, habit of quitting tobacco.
The main idea of the World No Tobacco Day is to raise awareness around the harmful effects of tobacco use, and to put pressure on tobacco companies and governments worldwide.
What does World No Tobacco Day mean?
It means an opportunity for people who are concerned about their health or the health of others to develop a personal commitment - a plan - to quit tobacco forever. In order to accomplish this goal, they have to:
Ask for help;
Decide not to smoke or chew tobacco at least once a day until that goal is achieved;
Find suitable ways of dealing with cravings/cravings-related problems (such as using nicotine replacement therapy [NRT] or behavioral change techniques); and
If they slip and have a cigarette, to get right back up and try again.

In addition, the celebration of this date will help to create awareness among the public about the importance of quitting smoking.
Benefits of quitting tobacco include:
decreased chances for lung cancer, coronary heart disease and stroke;
reduced risk in other cancers such as breast cancer;
improvement to the immune system after use of anticoagulants;
reduction by 25 percent in blood pressure following a major surgery or operation (less than one hour), which occurs at 0–20 minutes post-surgery);
improved recovery time from infections due an increase among children who smoke compared with those without smoking;
benefits to oral health including protection against cavities—upward 10 times longer on average per person within 5 years according both study authors.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has suggested that everyone become a temporary role model for non-smokers. The day offers an opportunity to speak out against tobacco consumption and against the tobacco industry who does everything in its power to get people hooked on tobacco products - including targeting youth, women, and developing countries through advertising and promotion of new products that are even more harmful than traditional cigarettes.
Personally, I have lost loved ones due to tobacco usage, and now is the time for me to speak up about this issue so that many more lives can be saved.
Lets say no to tobacco.
